Hiking trails available within 45 minutes of Sun Valley: Most hikes start close to 7000' and can go to over 8000'

Baker Lake: 4 Miles round trip, 850' gain, spectacular lake and mountain scenery, good fishing, very good beginner trail. Rated easy

Summit Creek: 4 to 7 miles depending on the amount of time and energy available for the group. Starts at 8000' and climbs only about 500' in the first 2 miles. Overall gain is 1400' in 3.5 miles making the 7 mile out and back hike. The hike offers dramatic high alpine scenery of the Pioneer Mountain range, with The Devils Bedstead toward the top of the hike. The first 2.5 miles are easy hiking, the last mile having steeper climbs. Rated easy to moderate.

North Fork Deer Creek: 7 miles round trip, 1200" gain, good early season hike, old mining settlement ruins, beautiful scenery of the Smoky Mountains. Beaver pond with an additional half-mile hiking. Rated easy to moderate

Mill Lake: 4.5 mile round trip, 1030' gain, crosses Prairie Creek once and Mill Creek twice. Follows a beautiful canyon alongside Mill Creek, then over glacial moraine to Mill Lake. No fishing at this lake but the scenery above the lake is incredible. Rated as easy.

Norton Lakes: 4 miles round trip to lower lake, 1500' gain, a short steep hike with lots of high ridges on either side. This area is a wild goat study area, a good hike to bring binoculars and camera. Rated as moderate.

5 Lakes Basin Trail: 5 mile loop trail, 1600' gain. Challenging but spectacular hike that includes walking the shoreline of 3 classic alpine lakes with views of several more and with a slight detour a hidden lake seen by few people. Our highest point is close to 9200' at Big Lost Lake, a great lunch spot, and excellent wildlife observation point for goat, pica, and birds of prey if they are in the vicinity. Rated difficult, with some steep and narrow trails.

Prairie Lakes: 9.5 miles out and back, 1500' gain. Very enjoyable hike with jagged ridges on both sides, this gentle climb following the creek will bring us to an open basin with several lakes and ponds to explore Rated Moderate.

PIONEER MOUNTAINS

The Pioneer Mountain Range is located south and east of Sun Valley in the Lost River District of the Challis National Forest and is still part of the Sawtooth Batholith. Our 6 day backpacking trip traverses the Northeastern slope of this magnificent range with its huge spires and dark blue and jade colored lakes. This trip covers a large portion of this splendid range, visits 2 of it's trout filled lakes, with stopover days to enjoy the natural beauty of one of Idaho's wilderness gems.

SMOKY MOUNTAINS

The Smoky Mountain range, located north and to the west of Sun Valley, and within the Sawtooth National Forest, traverses the Sawtooth and Fairfield Forest Service Districts. Our 10 day backpack trip follows trails through the remote roadless portions of this range. The route takes us to many of the highest and the most pristine of it's high mountain lakes, traveling through forest service wildlife study areas of the great Northern Mountain Goat, Wolverine and Bull Trout.
